The MECE framework is useful when developing issue trees for mitigating a challenge or solving an aching problem.

MECE is an acronym for Mutually Exclusive and Collectively Exhaustive.

So what is the meaning of the MECE framework?

Mutually Exclusive means that there should be no overlapping parts when an overarching problem is divided into its component parts.

What does Collectively Exhaustive mean then?

Collectively Exhaustive in the MECE framework means that the individual parts of the divided overarching idea when combined, should form a whole without any gap in between.

This means all the parts are identical with the problem in total, hence, they are collectively exhaustive.
