You bought a domain you've been using for quite some time or a new domain and wish to update some information on the domain such as your domain's DNS records or Namesevers but you are stuck as you find you cannot change or update any of these records.

The restriction may also apply to changing or updating any record at all your domain.

As a newbie, you may be puzzled and limited and you are probably asking why is this so?

Most people will go straight to contacting support but hey! before you do so, let me show you what may be responsible for the restriction on your ability to update your domain's records.

The first culprit in a case like this, is what is known as the 'registrar lock'.

The registrar lock helps to protect your domains against unauthorized transfers, and protects it from intruders' transferring, moving or changing your domain's records without your approval.

You may be facing this challenge probably because you've activated this feature accidentally.

The 'domain lock' or 'registrar lock' is not activated by default when you buy a domain.

So, first check to see if this feature is active before proceeding to troubleshoot further.

If you've checked and you are sure that the domain lock is inactive for you domain, then you can proceed to contact support for the cause of the problem. They should run a check on your domain and tell you why the problem exists on your domain.

Hope this helps you fix any access limitations on your domain, like the inability to update your domain records, DNS records and Namesavers.

Below are some related questions:

Why is my DNS not updating?

Your DNS may not be updating because of the reason stated above. If you can save the DNS records and it's not propagating, it may be due to inaccurate records entered, or a caching issue.

How do I force nameserver to update?
It normally takes some time before changes on your domain becomes visible on your website.
If you wish to force a manual update of your nameserver, this post on the Microsoft learn platform which entails the use of the ipconfig /registerdns command will be a useful resource.
